Chapter Twenty-One

“You have got to be kidding me!” screamed Wickman, kicking a plastic wastebasket in front of him and sending it rocketing toward the door, where it struck the wood and slid to a resting spot on the carpet. Crumpled papers were strewn across the office as a result. “How did he get to London? Do you even know that?”

“We think he smuggled himself aboard the Galaxy transport that landed at Homestead Air Force Base for repairs. It was destined for the United Kingdom to off-load supplies for the Brits. We think he hid in one of the pallets…”

John Norry was cut off by his irate boss. “You think? That’s a start! I haven’t seen too much thinking coming out of that group of yours in Miami!” Wickman had resumed roaming his office, his hand clutched tightly around the phone. “How did MI-6 let him slip away?”

“Seems Lockwood got the drop on one of their agents, knocked him out and fled into the center of town where he made contact with a Gary Granger who lives in London. Granger apparently helped him escape. The MI-6 agent was able to identify Granger from a photo. There’s a pick-up order out for Granger as well as Lockwood. All seaports and airports have been alerted to be on the lookout for the two fugitives.”

“What about the Air Force base? Let’s make sure Lockwood doesn’t try to get a free ride via the military again. His success in getting to England courtesy of the U.S. Air Force may have emboldened him to try to hitch another free ride.” Wickman had finally collapsed in his chair, his pent-up energy temporarily expended but his anger still seething just beneath the surface.

“We’ve already notified the base and two of the guards confirm Lockwood was there. Went into town with some British and American airmen but didn’t return.” John Norry waited for his boss to yell again and was surprised when only silence reigned.

“Have you sent a team to England? Let’s not trust the Brits with an issue that is ours and should be handled by us,” Wickman said. Lockwood was far more resourceful and daring than he had given the man credit for.

“Not yet. I wanted to wait and see if you wanted to send select personnel.”

“No. Go ahead and send your team. Keith Pratt is with you. Take your team, and you go as well. By the way, how did you know Lockwood was in England?” asked Wickman, focusing again on the problem at hand.

“He called his house and spoke to his girlfriend. We didn’t have time to set up a recording, but we did have a pin register installed on his phone and were able to track the call to Gary Granger in London. MI-6 was alerted and they moved in.” John Norry stopped, lest he should arouse the anger of his boss again.

“Interesting. Continue to monitor the girlfriend.” Wickman paused as his mind was racing. “No, never mind. Drop all surveillance on her and Shirley Waterbury.
